ACROSS THE TOP - Gardening with Australian Plants in the Tropics.
Compiled by Keith Townsend; published by SGAP Townsville Branch. Price about $26.00. Review by SGAP Qld. Region

This is a substantial book of over 400 pages and these are filled with a tremendous amount of information on such subjects as landscaping, soils, nutrition, fertilising, mulching, watering, pruning, propagation, pests and diseases, plant habitats, wildlife in the garden, bush tucker, rainforest gardens, etc. All this information has been provided from the practical experiences of members of SGAP in Townsville.

Add to this the descriptions of 1400 Australian plants suited to the tropics, and you have a mammoth effort. The plant descriptions have been written with minimal use of botanical terms; so that every gardener can understand and enjoy reading them without having to continually refer to the glossary. The plants described have been limited almost exclusively to those found growing naturally in tropical Australia. This does not mean, however, that this marvellous book is limited to people in northern Australia. Many of these plants occur further south and most of them can be grown in subtropical areas.

A few colour plates have been included and there are a number of black and white photographs. This is a book that will be very useful for anyone interested in Australian plants.
